IBC containment
IBC Spill Pallet Selection: Footprint, Sump and Valve Access
An IBC creates a different containment problem from a small drum: the support base, concentrated contact points and dispensing outlet all matter. Selecting by nominal tote volume alone can overlook whether the IBC is supported correctly or whether a valve leak would fall into the sump.
Match the actual IBC base
Provide the tote model, base dimensions and photographs or a drawing of the underside. Identify the feet, rails or contact areas that transmit weight to the deck. A platform that is wide enough overall may still require a particular support arrangement.
Confirm the maximum filled mass, including the tote, cage, liquid and accessories. A liquid denser than water changes that mass without changing the nominal container volume. Ask the pallet supplier to confirm the exact base and loading pattern rather than accepting a general total-load figure.
Specify required usable containment
The required sump capacity comes from the site design basis and applicable rules. Some buyers use a project requirement based on the largest container plus an allowance, but that must be checked for the location and stored material. The cited EPA and GOV.UK sources concern specified oil-storage contexts, not universal certification for IBC products.
The Zhuji Trading product page includes an indicative IBC pallet direction around 1,200 L sump capacity. Treat this as an example to investigate, not a guaranteed usable value for every supplied unit or a promise of site compliance. Obtain a model drawing and confirmed retention figure.

Trace the valve and dispensing path
Draw the position of the outlet, hose, connection and receiving vessel. Check whether plausible drips from the outlet and coupling land inside containment. A valve projecting beyond the pallet edge can defeat an otherwise generous sump.
If a dispensing shelf or tray is proposed, establish whether it drains to the main sump, its load limit and how its capacity is accounted for. Ask whether the operator can close the valve and remove the receiver without unstable reaching. Do not improvise supports to raise a tote.
Separate stationary use from movement
Confirm whether the pallet is intended to be moved empty, loaded, or only under particular loading conditions. The existence of fork entry is not enough. Supply the forklift fork spacing and length, entry direction, travel surface and intended load condition for review.
Also check unloading at the destination. A pallet that can be handled at the supplier may not suit the receiving site equipment or access route. Include the packaged dimensions and unloading plan in procurement discussions before finalising shipment.
Plan the inspection and changeover
Specify access to the sump, replaceable parts and a way to take a damaged unit out of service without leaving the IBC unsupported. Identify who checks the valve area and who owns the recovery of collected liquids.
For a useful enquiry, send the IBC drawing, liquid information, full mass, required sump volume, storage location and dispensing sketch. Zhuji Trading coordinates supplier confirmation and export details against these inputs; a complete brief makes the offered configurations easier to compare.
