Pallet cover applications
Thermal Pallet Covers for Air Freight and Cross-Dock Transfers
A shipment can spend most of its journey in controlled storage and still face an important temperature exposure during transfer. For buyers evaluating thermal pallet covers, the useful unit of analysis is the handoff: where the load waits, for how long, and under whose control.
Map each uncontrolled exposure window
List dispatch staging, vehicle loading, airport acceptance, ramp handling, transfer warehouses and final unloading. Record planned and credible delayed durations separately. An indoor cross-dock, a sunny apron and a cold loading bay should not be treated as the same environment.
Ask the forwarder to confirm which service arrangements are actually booked. A cover specification cannot compensate for an undocumented assumption that temperature-controlled storage will be available at every transfer.
Decide when the cover is installed and removed
Write the sequence from product conditioning through final receipt. If a cover is applied after the load has already warmed, it may slow subsequent cooling as well as further warming. Agree with the cargo owner on the correct conditioning and installation point.
Confirm whether security checks require opening or removing the cover. Assign responsibility for resealing it and checking the base. Coordinate labels and handling access with the carrier. If refrigerants or dangerous goods are involved, their transport requirements need separate review; the cover does not authorize the shipment.
Set a delay response before dispatch
- Name the maximum permitted exposure under the qualified operating procedure.
- Identify an escalation contact and suitable recovery storage at each critical stage.
- Define what happens if the cover is torn, opened or missing.
- Decide who reviews logger records and whether the cargo must be held pending review.
WHO describes temperature-controlled transport as a system of packaging, equipment and monitoring for pharmaceutical products. That guidance is relevant to pharmaceutical operations; citing it does not make a general-purpose pallet cover suitable for medicines. Product-specific quality approval remains necessary.
Compare options using the same shipment scenario
Give every candidate supplier the same load size, starting temperature, exposure sequence and handling constraints. Request the test configuration behind any claimed protection time. Reject comparisons where one result uses a full dense load and another uses a light partial load without explaining the difference.
The first trial should answer practical questions as well as thermal ones: can the operator fit the cover consistently, can a checker inspect it, and can the receiver remove it without damaging the goods?
